What is the difference between bar angle and structural steel angle?

Bar angle (also called steel angle bar) and structural steel angle differ in size, cross-sectional weight, and intended application. Bar angle runs from 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8" up to 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 3/16" and is used for lighter fabrication work such as brackets, supports, and trim. Structural steel angle starts at 3" x 2" x 3/16" and is engineered for load-bearing applications where the material must meet design specifications and code requirements. If your project involves structural framing or will be engineer-stamped, you need structural angle.

Is angle iron the same as steel angle?

Yes. Angle iron is a colloquial term for steel angle that dates back to early industrial manufacturing. Today, the industry uses steel angle, angle iron, and steel angle iron interchangeably to describe the same L-shaped carbon steel profile with two legs meeting at a 90-degree angle. The more precise term for procurement and specification purposes is steel angle.

What does ASTM A36 mean, and why does it matter for structural steel angle?

ASTM A36 is the material specification published by ASTM International that defines minimum mechanical properties for common structural carbon steel. For structural steel angle, A36 specifies a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi (248 MPa), tensile strength between 58 and 80 ksi, and minimum elongation of 20% in an 8-inch gauge length. These properties ensure consistent performance, weldability, and code compliance in structural applications. Most structural steel angle used in construction and heavy fabrication is produced to A36, and engineers typically call it out by name on project drawings.

What is the difference between equal-leg and unequal-leg steel angle?

Unequal-leg angle has legs of different lengths, such as 6" x 3-1/2" x 5/16", and is used when load distribution or geometry requirements call for a longer leg on one axis.
